TEDxYSE speaker Dennis Whittle in New York Times
The New York Times has mentioned Dennis Whittle, one of TEDxYSE’s social innovator speakers, and his organization GlobalGiving in a recent article, “Hybrid Model for Nonprofits Hits Snags.” The piece highlights the surge of social enterprises that combine both profit and nonprofit elements, and addresses the challenges and benefits of this model.
The particular merge of profit-making and non-profit work is designed to avoid the lack of funding that so often plagues non-profits. The profit side attracts investors, providing financial backing for the non-profit, thus increasing the sustainability, scope, and efficiency of the non-profit’s initiatives. GlobalGiving, founded and headed by Dennis Whittle, reflects this strategy, and has been effective in “[channeling] more than $30 million to charitable projects like buying seeds for farmers in Zimbabwe.”
Unfortunately, this ‘hybrid model’ has its challenges. The article details certain difficulties, notably sustainability and difference in interest. However, many are still proponents of the model. GlobalGiving is an example of an enterprise with a hybrid model that has encountered problems, but continues to successfully create social change.
Come hear Dennis Whittle, founder and CEO of GlobalGiving, at TEDxYSE on November 13th.
